I was very impressed with your site, and with your activities. I know this journey must have been so painful at times. I'm a big strong guy but I'll admitt that tears welled up in my eyes as I looked at and rea your materials. I know that everything I find out about my fathers family, and the town of Zabludow is both a joy and a pain. Just this past week my 11 year old son came home from Hebrew school telling me with a very puzzeled look that one of his little l ssmates was saying how millions of jews were murdered. He really didn't know if to believe it. I gave him the broad outlines, and told him that I knew quite a bit, and could tell him much more when he felt ready. He told me that he wasn't, and would rat e wait until sixth grade when they cover it in Hebrew school. We've made an effort to give him a Jewish education and strong identity. I pray that at the close of the next century our children's children will be bravely carrying our great heritage into t e rture. Shalom, Tilford. Hitler wasn't in Germany 's leadership for 5 years, but for more than 12. Let's not forget about the condition of the Jews in Russia , the lowest in Europe at the turn of the ce tury. Comments: In case you missed it in the theatres, on March 21 Columbia TriStar Home Video will release on videocassette and DVD, Jakob the Liar, an unforgettable uplifting drama starring Academy Award-Winner Robin Williams. In Nazi-occupied Poland during World War I , poor Jewish caf й owner Jakob (Robin Williams) accidentally overhears a forbidden radio news bulletin signaling Soviet military successes againGerman forces. To combat the overwhelming depression and suicide that pervades the ghetto, Jakob tells ict tious news bulletins about Allied advances against the Nazis. The Germans learn of the mythical radio, however , and begin a s arch for the resistance hero who dares operate it. The film also stars Liev Schrieber (Sphere), Armin Mueller-Stahl (The Thirteenth Floor) and Alan Arkin (Edward Scissorhands). I did a search for the surname Holtzman, and according to Yahoo, you were one of seven. When I saw your mother's picture, it grabbed me. She was very beautiful, as was my grandmother Stella, at that age. The fact that a polish woman had the name of Hol zman astounded me. My fat's name is Holtzman and his grandfather was born in Germany . My mother's parents, the Shipek's, were both born in Poland . My father was born in the U.S. , as was his mother. My mother (Wanda) and Aunt Barbara were born somewhere in France because of the holocaust. I may sound like an ignorant American, but I've come to believe (over my 28 years) that this union divided by war caused a patriotic rift in my family. Comments: Your site is exciting. Keep up the good work. I also am trying to connect with Rabbi Jonathan Eybeschuetz. Comments: Inspiring-now I start my own search-in INDURA, Belorus. You site is interesting and I agree that there needs to be a memoriain Gombin - anywhere that people were tortured, killed and treated worse than animals. We should never forget what happened, nor should we close our eyes to what is happening now in our world, were one group thinks that they are the more superior race. Keep informing the world about what happened to your family. who were born in CZESTOCHOWA . Don't just sit back and let one evil man take out a whole race. No one should have that power. Only God knows when it is time fo a human being to join him in eternal bliss. As many people were tormented and killed, we sat back and partied and went along with our merry lives. It is time to take a stand! A stand for morality! I am outraged by the fact that so many were influenced by on corrupt man. Since when do we dowhatever we are told. If one would have taken a stand many would have followed, and many innocent lives would have been saved. We should be ashamed! (I think it's wonderful that you have ability to distribute through the Internet a tribute to your mother, commemorating her life. We live in a potentially wonderful world, if only "nation would not lift up sword agains nation." What the world needs is beneficent dictator who would use the threat of "swords and pruning hooks" over the heads of nation leaders who would like to make war, and provide counselors to show them how to solve their problems. John - May 2001 Dear Ada: I have just mailed to a complete text about Szlengel and all his known poems in Polish. I have sent it all to you as a way of preserving the book that appeared in very limited edition in 1977 and Copyrighted by the National Publishing Institute in Warsaw with poems gathered and edited by Irena Maciejewska with her notes and footnotes. This is about all that is known about Szlengel although I hae come across his name in numerous books and stories..In 1977 Poland was publishing very limited editions about 10,000 and less per book having anything to do with Jews. So by sending to the copies of t his book to add to the preservation of his memory. There is also a somewhat monumental anthology of Jewish poetry in Polish PIESN UDZIE CALO. I am sure that there are numerous people in Israel who can translate from Polish into English and from Yiddish into English . and Hebrew. It is all work that needs to be done. John. I especially appreciate the list of landsmanschaften in Israel . I found one, and will use the Tarnow address to see what I can learn about the two towns that might be too small for associations. Thanks again, Brenda BR. Comments: I feel fortunate and happy to have some small connection to Gombin on behalf of my father's lost family. My father refuses to talk about the past in any way shape or form. All he will say is that the family was very poor and that he had to steal potatoe s not to go hungry. Unfortunately, I have not been successful in finding any information at all about them and I along with others who are in the same situation, feel sad. Sincerely, Hyla Cooper Birenbaum. Comments: Well it started out that i was looking for school stuff off of here but as soon as i saw some of the topics i couldn't stop reading. i'm sorry that anyone had to go through this and i am sorry, even though i am only 16 and don't know what it's like. this llent and keep doing what you are doing! Comments: I have so many things to say. Maybe I am still thinking about everthing and don't know what to say. I am 25. When I was in grade school and read Anne Frank's diary and many more titles since then, I have wondered what in the world happened during the holo aust. Maybe not even what but HOW does this happen. I believe it. I don't find it fascinating. It's like a horromovie. Why watch it or put it in your life. I just can't not think about it. I just don't understand. I guess if people did it would have nev r happened. Sometimes, I look at pictures or if we are watching a special on the history channel, I look at the people who were killed or misplaced and I just see people. They don't look any differnt. Such sweet babies, beautiful men and women, old young. They are people. I get sick thinking if someone ever touched my family or baby's life in this way. This probably doesn't make sense. I don't know why I am writing this. Does this get read? I just want to let someone, anyone, know I care and hurt for the p ople who were and are vicitims of others. Comments: I was very moved by your tribute to your parents and their shetl.
